I knew he was in bad shape for awhile and had to undergo a few different operations in recent years for his heart. I've had the opportunity to meet Ricou Browning a few times at Florida conventions and he's a really nice guy...I always wanted to meet Chapman as well but he rarely did conventions and was never at any of the ones I've attended. "he's full of shit. He's too big for his Vietnam boots. He thinks he's a tough guy. He got his nose fixed while making MANIAC, ask him, and tell him I'll bust it for him the next time I see him. He made his own movie, so what! Nobody cared. Nobody saw it. He thinks he's a good actor. He stinks. He sucks big dick! He's an ego maniac... " - Joe Spinell on Tom Savini (1989)

He did a lot of the Chiller Cons in New Jersey. With an autographed picture (and he charged a lot!) you got a reproduction of his Universal-International contract to play the on land Creature. He appreciated the fame & fans that came to him late in life after his identity was discovered. How many actors get to play a creature (no pun intended) who becomes a popular culture icon? Show anybody a still of the 'gill man' & they know it's the Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Adios, Big Ben. :'(

Fuckkkkkk! This brings a tear to my eye... The Gillman was there from the beginning for me. Creature From the Black Lagoon had a huge effect on my life when I was a young child and just finding out about movies let alone horror films. To this day the Creature is the best Universal Monster out there... Hope you rest in peace Ben.
