I'll give DVDS 10 years then BR will be the preferred format. BR and Downloads. That is it.
I have no intentions on getting a BR Player until I get a new TV. Thats not gonna be for awhile from the looks.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. I really have no interest in Blu Ray, but I am kind of happy to see DVD prices going down! When Blu Ray takes over and DVD is collectible and nostalgic, I'll be the one with the awesome collection!!! Sort of like what happened to VHS. I wish I had a better VHS player, in all honesty... although, I'm starting to buy more bootlegs as VHS are getting way too damn expensive.

DVD is definitely on it's way out but I'm in no hurry to switch.
I built a powerhouse HTPC with a Sony Bravia as my monitor, so visually I'm already set. I'm waiting a while longer before I replace my drive with a Blue Ray because my kid has her PS3 hooked up to the monitor as well.
To me BD's are crisper in appearance but not so significant as to blow me away. DVD's are on the cheap, and truthfully the 'net is my bitch and I can find just about anything I want with a little perseverance.... but usually it's only a matter of minutes.
I still buy films, but usually if I find it at a good price, it has extras that I can not resist, or if it's simply impossible to find any other way.
Color me visionary, but in the future I see formats as eventually being obsolete... Internet TV's will be the thing and all movies will simply be online at your fingertips once the studio kinks get ironed out.
My reasoning is that it saves resources. While still needing electricity, it's paperless, chemical free, and with the proper encoding... control of distribution.
Or I could be full of bollocks... because I also understand the satisfaction of having something tangible in my hands.

Physical media are disappearing across all forms of entertainment. We already have a generation who has no real interest in owning music on a CD or cassette...only files on an MP3 player. Magazines and newspapers are vanishing by the day, and a new e-book reader is announced or released virtually every week. I believe, in the end, Blu-Ray will be viewed as a transitional format between DVD and download. One factor working in Blu-Ray's favor is that movie studios have learned from the carnage illegal downloading has wrought on the music industry and will not want to go away from physical media until it's unavoidable.

Where is it that DVD prices are going down???? Around here they've stayed pretty much the same price for the last 6 or so years. Oh, you can get titles at Wally-World for 5 bucks, but they are the titles that have been out for a LONG time. Anything less than a year old are still closer to 20 bucks than to 10. And Blu-ray is rediculous! A few months ago you go to Walmart or Target and find good sales on Blu for under $15... not any more. Cheap ones are over $15 and new releases are at least $19.95. And I haven't seen ANYTHING at Best Buy worth having priced below $20. Occasionally at Walmart there are some at around $10, but honestly nothing I want for that price.

It is all about price, once the players and movies go down then Blue Ray will take over until then DVD is fine. Plenty of places still have new DVDs for 15$ or more so that is a sign that they are doing fine. Not everyone has the cash for a blue ray player and a high def TV which you need to really enjoy it. It will be a few years before the average Joe can afford to go out and buy all that, most titles on Blue Ray that are cheap I either have on DVD already of have no interest in getting. Sad thing is I think that a lot of movies will not be put out on blue ray, I could be wrong but some movies I love like Cannibal Campout or Ghoul School I can not see getting put on blue ray. For me anyway there are still tons of stuff on DVD that I need to get before I even worry about blue ray, again most of those so obscure that may not ever get put on blue ray.

I don't know maybe eventually...I honestly do not know one person who owns a Blu-Ray...I just don't really see the use in converting..doesn't seem like it's as drastic of a change in quality like it was with VHS and DVD...maybe it's just me but our Best Buys and stuff around here are still 90 percent DVD just doesn't seem to be as popular here.

Yeah i have really tried to stop buying dvds unless it is something I'm pretty sure will never go to bluray. Some people tired to hold on to VHS untill they could no longer. I think the format has really had a short run but yeah it does seem its on its way out.

You might be right Wes, and if so, it's a sad state of affairs. I'm still not certain that Blu-Ray is the superior medium yet, with the way studios are handling the format. I've viewed 20 or so Blu-Rays and most of them have been mediocre, to shit quality. Nothing has really wowed me -- especially the older films. Misery was a great achievement though. Obviously newer films are going to appear exceptionally for the most part, but hell, if the format continues to deliver releases on par with Wrong Turn and Total Recall, then the future isn’t that bright. Are we to settle for visual abominations such as these two I’ve mentioned? Adorned with the HD moniker as a misguided selling device to boot! I kid you not -- I attempted to watch Wrong Turn on Blu-Ray and had to turn it off. I finished it off by popping in my DVD of the film which is superior in quality by leaps and bounds. To me things like this are unforgivable. Had they ported the exact DVD onto Blu-Ray it would have been fine compared to what they released. It’s mind boggling how a visually enhanced format can look drastically worse. Then look at releases from the little guys like the recent Hardware from Severin Films, which looks great. I don’t get it. Is it laziness of the studios? Anyway enough of this rant. I’m all for change, and evolution of cinematic formats, but shouldn’t it enhance your enjoyment and viewing experience. If DVD is doomed and this is where Blu-Ray is headed then there are disappointing days ahead for film buffs and consumers alike. Get used to the distracting, ugly, dancing flashes of film grain.

Reminding me so much of the dying days of laserdisc in 1999-2000. These kind of deals are great for the consumer to get some excellent discs on the cheap but I can't help but think that the DVD format is slowly on the way out.
Look at Big Lots, who ever thought we'd get quality discs from major studios there for $3. It all started with Wal-Mart years ago when the titles were priced (at the time a steal) $9.99. Then over the years we've seen the prices drop to $6.88, $5.88, $5.50, $5.00 to now $4.00. Only the new release titles are the ones above $14.99.
Now if you look at a more premium store like a Best Buy, its mainly all Blu-Ray...with the BD's up front and the lowly DVD's hiding in the back of the store (with no one around them) with the sale price of $5 on most titles.
DVD has been a great format with decent picture quality, I think the audiences now are slowly becoming more and more interested in the superior format that is Blu-Ray and all of its new capabilities. While the DVD format may be around in some capacity within the next 5-10 years I think the market is starting to phase them out and will be moving to a High - Def format that will support everyone's new HD-TV's they purchase over the next few years.
What do you think?! |

yeah that's the problem with me in blu ray it just simply doesn't impress me like Dvd did when that first came out. i can tell you one thing that I'm NEVER going to re buy all my movies i have on Dvd on to blu ray that is a huge waste of money.
